About Chapora Fort

The Chapora fort overlooks the Chapora River and hence the name is derived from. The fort was built in the year 1717 where many rulers have held this fort for varied periods of time but the rivalry was mainly seen between Marathas and Portuguese to gain control over it. It was although built to serve as a place of strategic importance for defense purposes but it fell very quickly in the test of military prowess.

Although little remains of the barracks and other buildings that once stood within the forts embrace, it continues to attract historical buffs who know about those great battles once fought. It’s a collection of sturdy, irregular shaped walls, hint of tunnels can be found by the observer. The fort is famous for its ruins and the success of the Bollywood movie “Dil Chahta Hein’’ which was made in this place popularizing even more.

Apart from its historical episodes, the fort is best in the evening time of the sunset sky providing a look of spectacular from the fort, especially when the sky paints everything around of the river and the beaches of Chapora. A best place for meditation and visualizing such stark contrast of historical and natural enthuse.
