About Double Decker Living Root bridge

Located in the dense forest of Meghalaya, soaked with rainfall for most parts of the year are the amazing partially natural and man-made wonders of the living Root bridges. They have been created by the Khasi tribe using roots that grow from the ancient rubber trees, only to be seen in the north east area. They have trained the roots to grow in the manner to shape up the bridge on top of the river.

These bridges are contrary to the wooden bridges that dwindle with rainfall. The double decker living root bridges are two bridges stacked one above the other, located in Cherrapunjee. This stacking is possible due to the entanglement of roots. It takes over 15 years for a root bridge to grow and develop as a strong bridge that can sustain the weight of the people crossing it. The roots become stronger over the years. The double decker root bridge is a very popular tourist destination in Cherrapunjee.
