A small town in Sikkim, Namchi is home to monasteries, temples, valleys and forests. Namchi literally means “sky high” and stands true to its name as it’s situated at a height of 5500 ft. Tendong hill- Literally meaning the “the upraised horn”, this hill is of significance to people of Namchi as it’s believed to be a savior from floods and other calamities. Located at a height of 8500ft, in south Sikkim, this hill is visited by tourists who want to enjoy beautiful landscapes, mountains and valleys of flowers.
Siddeshwar dham- Located at Solophok hill, this dham is thronged by Shiva followers from all across the country.Siddeshwar dham has a 108 ft tall statue of Shiva, replicas of the 12 Jyotirlingas and 18 ft statue of Kirateshwar, a hunter incarnation of Shiva. Tourists not only from the country but also outside visit the place and can enjoy religious discourses, recreational and cultural activities. This complex is also known as char dham and spreads over 29 hectares.
Ngadak monastery- One of the oldest monasteries in Namchi, this 17th century monastery literally means promise. So whoever visits the monastery has to make a promise to visit it again. This monastery was constructed as a palace for her highness Pendi Ongmu. This monastery is a symbol of Sikkim’s ancient traditions.
Maenam wildlife sanctuary- This sanctuary spreads over 3500 sq km is situated at a height of 10500 ft above sea level. Home to species like Red panda, magpies and blue necked pita, this wildlife sanctuary is a must visit for nature and photography lovers.
Tarey bhir- For nature lovers, Tarey bhir is a must visit. Tarey bhir is a 3 km long ridge with 3000 ft drop in the end. “Bhir” literally means cliff and gives a breathtaking view of valley, forests and meeting point of two rivers – Sikkim Teesta and Rangit. It also gives a view of the only tea garden in Sikkim- Temi tea garden.
Rock garden- Located just 10 minutes away from Samudruptse, rock garden gives the visitors a beautiful view of flowers, bridges over lilipools and plantations. A perfect place to visit with kids, this garden relaxes your senses and get closer to nature. A must see in the garden is the huge iety of orchids.
Ralong monastery- a Buddhist monastery, located around 6 kms from Ravangla, this monastery was built after the successful completion of the 4th king to Tibet. It is one of the most significant monastery of the kagyu sect in Sikkim.peaceful lush green surroundings add more charm to this serene monastery.
Mangala bay- located on the teesta river, this vacation destination is situated 29 kms away from Sikkim abut is a must visit Mahananda sanctuary and Teesta bowl are two must see places when visiting this serene spot. Just take a book and relax in the lap of nature.`
Food
There aren’t many restaurants in Namchi, but still food lovers especially meat lovers won’t be disappointed. Noodles, momos and pork are a fav among the locals. Traditional Sikkim dishes to try while visiting Namchi are Gya Thuk, Phagshapa and Gundruk. A popular local drink is Chaang and is a must try. The Height Restaurant, Kamal fast food and Unique sweets are some of the popular restaurants in Namchi. There are some bars and clubs also which will give you a peek into the nightlife of Namchi.
Sopping
Shopping in Namchi is more about handicrafts, paintings, wooden carvings and cane & bamboo items. Stuffed dolls are a must take away when one is visiting Namchi.
By Bus
There is a good network of State government and private buses, which join the small town of Namchi with other major places in and around Sikkim. Buses are also available at every airport and railway station to help you reach the desired destination.
By Taxi
Cabs connect places like Siliguri, Bagdogra and Darjeeling to Namchi. Roads are well built and cabs are easily available. Gangtok, Yuksom and pelling are connected with Namchi through NH 31 A
By Train
New Jalpaiguri is the nearest railway station to Namchi. Located about 100 kms away from Namchi, this railway station is linked to all most all the major stations of the country.
By Air
There is no airport in Namchi. The nearest airport is Bagdogra airport which is around 120 kms away from Gangtok and 100 kms from Namchi. Gangtok and Bagdogra are also connected by helicopter services. One can take a cab or buses to reach Namchi from Gangtok.
