Port Maria

Port Maria is the capital metropolis of the Jamaican parish of Saint Mary. Originally named "Puerto Santa Maria", it became the second one metropolis installed by using Spanish settlers in Jamaica. It has a population of about 7,500 human beings. Notable buildings encompass St Mary's Parish Church, built in 1861, and the St Mary courthouse, a Georgian shape built in 1820 which now houses the Port Maria civic centre. Port Maria is the birthplace of Sports Illustrated version Georgianna Robertson. As of March 2012, the Mayor is Levan Ainsworth Freeman.

Port Maria, and indeed the whole parish of St Mary, has a totally antique and deep-seated tradition of protest. From as early as 1655, African slaves let loose via the fleeing Spanish took to the hills, forming Maroon groups and wearing out the occasional assault on British estates and cities. In 1760, Tacky, the notorious revolt slave, led a rebellion towards slave proprietors that lasted over a month before British authorities ought to suppress the preventing.
